How We Taste: Book Launch for Distilled Knowledge

Join us at WorkBar Cambridge to celebrate the launch of Distilled Knowledge: The Science Behind Drinking’s Greatest Myths, Legends, and Unanswered Questions, by our own Brian Hoefling ES'12!

Brian is a writer, cocktail historian, and the founder of the Herzog Cocktail School, which provides lessons on the history and preparation of classic cocktails. His talk will cover the scientific principles covered in the book, with a particular focus on what it means to taste: the smells, sensations, and even psychological triggers that contribute to our perception of flavor.

The talk will begin at 6:30 (doors open at 6:00), and will be followed by a Q&A and signing. Copies of Distilled Knowledge will be available for purchase, courtesy of the Harvard Book Store.

The event is free and no reservations are required. For more information, please visit this page.

From the publisher's description of Distilled Knowledge:

Everyone has questions about drinking, but it can seem like every bartender (and bargoer) has different answers. Between the old wives' tales, half-truths, and whiskey-soaked conjectures, it's hard to know what to believe—until now. Armed with cutting-edge research and a barfly’s thirst for the truth, cocktail instructor Brian D. Hoefling tackles the most burning questions and longest-held myths surrounding that most ancient of human pastimes—with the science to either back them up or knock them down. From the ins and outs of aging to the chemistry of a beer head and the science behind your hangover, Distilled Knowledge provides a complete and comical education that will put an end to any barroom dispute, once and for all.

From the early reviews of Distilled Knowledge:

This authoritative account should quench your thirst for knowledge about the facts and myths surrounding alcoholic beverages, from how they are made to what effects they have on people. What a delightful read, written in an easy to understand style with superb illustrations.
